Why Florida humidity makes freezing worse
An evaporator coil cools by staying just above freezing. When airflow drops or refrigerant runs low, the coil temperature falls below 32 degrees. In a dry climate that is a slow problem. In Winter Springs, where the air carries a heavy moisture load most of the year, that humidity condenses on the cold coil and freezes into ice within an hour or two. Once ice forms it blocks airflow completely, which makes the coil colder, which makes more ice. The system is now fighting itself.
The two root causes
Restricted airflow is the most common: a clogged filter, a dirty blower wheel, collapsed or undersized ductwork, or closed vents. Low refrigerant is the other: a leak drops the pressure, the coil gets too cold, and it freezes even with clean airflow. A leak also means the problem comes back until the leak itself is found and sealed, so topping off refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary fix at best.
What to do the moment you see ice
Turn the cooling off at the thermostat but leave the fan set to ON. The blower keeps moving room-temperature air across the coil and thaws it far faster than letting it sit. Give it a few hours and put towels down for the meltwater. Do not chip at the ice and do not keep running the AC frozen, because sending liquid refrigerant back to a running compressor is what destroys it. Once it is fully thawed, replace the filter and try again.
When it needs a tech
