What SEER2 is and the Florida minimum
SEER2 is the current efficiency rating for air conditioners, a measure of cooling output per unit of energy under updated 2023 testing standards that better reflect real-world conditions than the old SEER number. Because Florida is in the federally defined Southeast region, new split-system central ACs installed here must meet at least 14.3 SEER2. That is the floor, not a recommendation. You cannot legally install a new system below it, and in Heathrow's climate the floor is rarely where the smart money lands.
Why many Florida homes go higher
The reason to step above the minimum is simple: our cooling season is long, so the efficiency difference runs up a lot of hours. A jump from 14.3 to 15.2 or 16 to 17+ SEER2 trims the cooling portion of your power bill every month for the eight or nine months the system runs hard, and over a 12 to 15 year lifespan that adds up. Higher-SEER2 systems also tend to include two-stage or variable-speed compressors that dehumidify better and hold a steadier temperature, which matters as much for comfort in Florida humidity as the raw efficiency number.
Where the payback stops making sense
Higher is not automatically better for every home. The premium for a top-tier 18 to 20+ SEER2 system is real, and the payback period stretches out the higher you climb. For a home you plan to sell in a few years, a mid-range unit often makes more financial sense than the most efficient one on the shelf. The right answer depends on your home's cooling load, how long you will stay, and your budget, which is exactly why sizing and system selection should be a conversation, not a spec you pick off a chart.
