How the two systems differ
Central AC cools the whole house through a network of ducts from one indoor air handler and one outdoor unit. A ductless mini-split skips the ducts entirely: one outdoor unit feeds one or more wall or ceiling heads that cool individual rooms or zones directly. Both are heat pumps at heart and both cool and heat, but the delivery is different, and in Longwood that difference decides which one actually makes sense for a given project. There is no single winner, only the right tool for the space.
When central AC wins
If your home already has good ductwork and you are cooling the whole house, central AC is usually the better value. A single system handles the entire home at a lower cost per ton than adding up several mini-split heads, the indoor units are hidden, and for most Florida homeowners it is the familiar, straightforward replacement when an old system dies. As long as the ducts are reasonably sealed and sized, replacing a central system with a new right-sized, higher-SEER2 central system is the simplest path.
When a mini-split wins
Ductless shines exactly where ducts are the problem. A room addition, a garage or attic conversion, an enclosed porch, or a bonus room over the garage that the central system never quite reaches, those are ideal mini-split jobs, because running new ductwork to them is expensive and often impractical. Mini-splits also give you true room-by-room zoning, so you are not paying to cool empty rooms, and their variable-speed compressors dehumidify well, which matters in our humidity. For a home with no ductwork at all, a multi-zone mini-split can condition the whole house without the cost and disruption of installing ducts.
