What short cycling actually is
A healthy heat pump runs in reasonably long cycles, several minutes at least, and longer on extreme days. Short cycling is when it kicks on and shuts off again within a minute or two, over and over. It is one of the harder things on the equipment, because the compressor draws its heaviest current at startup, and a system that starts every few minutes racks up wear and power draw far faster than one that runs in steady cycles. So even before it fully fails, short cycling is quietly shortening the life of your most expensive component.
The common causes we find in Central Florida
Restricted airflow is first: a clogged filter, dirty coil, or blocked return trips the system's high-pressure or freeze protection and it shuts down early, then restarts. Low refrigerant from a leak does the same by pushing pressures out of range. A failing capacitor or contactor lets the compressor try to start and then drop out. An oversized system, one too big for the house, satisfies the thermostat almost instantly and cycles all day, which is a design problem, not a broken part. And a thermostat placed in direct sun, near a supply vent, or simply failing can misread the room and cycle the unit needlessly.
Why you should not let it ride
Short cycling rarely fixes itself, and every extra start is more strain on the compressor and more electricity for less comfort. It also usually points to an underlying fault, low charge, a dying capacitor, an airflow restriction, that will get worse on its own.
